Safety Tips to Follow When Towing a Vehicle

With years of experience behind us here at Rick’s Auto Repair & Towing, we don’t mind telling you that towing another vehicle isn’t as easy as it looks, especially if you’ve never done it before. If you’re considering towing another vehicle for the first time, or if you’re considering towing another vehicle for the umpteenth time, there are some things you should keep in mind if you’re going to stay safe. Here are our five tips to help you tow another vehicle safely.

  1. Be prepared

As with anything else in life, it always pays to be prepared. Before you even get started you should thoroughly examine your towing equipment to ensure it’s in perfect working order; you should fully inflate (to manufacturer’s standards) your tires; you should attach clear signs to the vehicle being towed alerting other drivers; and you should clearly plan your route, avoiding smaller roads if possible.

  1. Pick your timing

Towing is always easiest when there are fewer people around. Here in Austin you might think that traffic’s bad, but it’s not bad all the time. Try to fit your journey in after the morning rush hour and before the afternoon rush hour. It’s never wise to tow in the dark.

  1. Keep a safe pace

Drive too fast and you run the risk of losing control of the vehicle behind you. Drive to slow and you’ll struggle to get anywhere. Try to keep a constant speed that feels comfortable and remember that in this case that it’s not your responsibility to reach the speed limit.

  1. Maneuver carefully

Towing another vehicle will affect any driving maneuvers you make, ordinarily lending itself to a sluggish feeling. It’s vital you take greater care than normal when maneuvering. Never try to pass a slower vehicle, don’t take corners too fast, and above all, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

  1. Know when enough is enough

Towing can be slow and laborious. It can also weigh in on your emotions. If you’re struggling with the tow, don’t be afraid to pull over and stop. Take a few minutes to rest your mind. If you’re still not feeling up to it, there’s no shame in letting a professional take over.

Nobody would blame you if you’d rather leave the towing to the professionals. Here in Austin, Texas, Rick’s Auto Repair & Towing provides a first class towing service for all kinds of vehicles.
